Arc Summary
The Control Devil Arc is the grand finale of Chainsaw Man Part 1, bringing every thread of the story to a devastating and beautiful conclusion. Makima reveals her true identity as the Control Devil, one of the Four Horsemen, and her ultimate goal: to use Chainsaw Man's unique ability to erase concepts from existence. She wants to erase War, Death, and Hunger to create a "better" world, but her definition of better is absolute control over all humanity. The arc opens with Makima killing Power in front of Denji, the final act needed to completely break his spirit.
With Denji's will shattered, his contract with Pochita is voided, and Pochita takes over as the true Chainsaw Man. The "Hero of Hell" emerges in his full, terrifying glory: a black, four-armed chainsaw monster that represents the apex predator of devils. Pochita battles Makima and her army of controlled devils, including the Weapon Hybrids and the full power of the Gun Devil. But even Pochita cannot defeat Makima in direct combat because she can control anyone she perceives as inferior to herself.
Power's Final Gift
In the arc's most emotional moment, Power, returned from death by Pochita's blood consumption, makes her final appearance. She offers her blood to revive Denji, knowing it will kill her permanently. The Blood Devil gave her a second life, and she gives it to the person who mattered most. Her farewell, demanding that Denji find the new Blood Devil when it reincarnates and "turn her back into Power," is simultaneously funny, heartbreaking, and hopeful. It is the purest articulation of Chainsaw Man's theme: that connections persist beyond death, and that love is worth the pain of loss.
Denji's Victory
Denji's ultimate strategy against Makima is ingenious. He realizes that Makima's perception-based control has a critical weakness: she perceives Chainsaw Man as superior, and Denji as inferior. By attacking her as Denji, not as Chainsaw Man, he bypasses her control. He also realizes that Makima's real desire is to be loved and to form an equal relationship, something she has never been able to do because of her power. Denji defeats her not through violence but through consumption: he cooks her body and eats it, absorbing her into himself. The act is grotesque but framed as an act of love, ensuring that Makima is part of him forever. The arc ends with Denji, now caring for Nayuta (the reincarnated Control Devil), finding a new purpose in breaking the cycle of abuse that created Makima.
