Chainsaw Devil Overview
The Chainsaw Devil, affectionately known as Pochita in its weakened dog form, is the central entity of the Chainsaw Man series and the most feared devil in existence. Unlike other devils powered by collective human fear of their concept, the Chainsaw Devil draws its immense strength from the fear that other devils have of it. This unique dynamic makes it the apex predator of Hell, a being so terrifying that devils pray they never encounter it.
In its true form, the Chainsaw Devil is a towering humanoid figure with four arms, each ending in roaring chainsaws, and a head that splits open to reveal a massive chainsaw blade. Its body is wrapped in intestine-like cords, and it moves with a speed that makes it appear to teleport. The sound of its chainsaw engine striking is a death knell for any devil, as the Chainsaw Devil possesses the ultimate power: erasure from existence itself.
The Erasure Power
The Chainsaw Devil's signature ability is the power of erasure. When it consumes a devil in Hell, that devil and the concept it represents are permanently erased from existence. This is not simply death followed by reincarnation on Earth; it is total ontological deletion. The world forgets the concept ever existed. Historical events involving that concept are retroactively altered. Notable examples include the erasure of the Nazi Devil, the Nuclear Weapons Devil, the World War II Devil, and even abstract concepts like the AIDS Devil and certain alternatives to death other than dying.
This erasure power is what makes the Chainsaw Devil the object of Makima's obsession. As the Control Devil, Makima desires to use the Chainsaw Devil's power to erase concepts she dislikes from the world, such as war, hunger, and death itself, creating what she perceives as a perfect world. Her plan drives the entire narrative of Part 1, culminating in the Control Devil Arc.
Pochita & Denji's Contract
After a battle in Hell where the Chainsaw Devil was severely wounded by the Four Horsemen and other powerful devils, it retreated to Earth in a near-death state, taking the form of a small, orange dog-like creature with a chainsaw handle on its head and a retractable blade in its snout. This form, named Pochita, was discovered by a young Denji, whose father had died leaving him with a massive debt to the Yakuza.
Denji, despite his own poverty, shared his food and blood with the dying Pochita, forming a genuine bond. When Denji was betrayed and murdered by the Yakuza (who had made a contract with the Zombie Devil), Pochita offered a contract: it would become Denji's heart, allowing Denji to live as a hybrid, in exchange for Denji showing Pochita his dreams. This act of selfless sacrifice set the entire story in motion. The contract's actual condition is that Pochita will emerge in his true form if Denji ever breaks his contract — specifically, if Denji ever ceases to have the will to live his dreams.
The True Form Emergence
During the climax of Part 1, Makima systematically breaks Denji's spirit by killing Power and Aki, leading to Pochita emerging in his true form. The Chainsaw Devil, unrestricted by Denji's human consciousness, demonstrates its full combat capability: destroying the Hell Devil in a single blow, fighting Makima and the Weapon Devils simultaneously, and even launching its own heart into space to escape Makima's control. It then falls back to Earth from orbit and continues fighting, showing a level of tactical intelligence and combat adaptability unmatched by any other devil.
Pochita is ultimately restored to dormancy when Denji (revived by Power's blood) creates a plan to defeat Makima using a chainsaw made from Power's blood. Denji attacks Makima not with malice but with love, consuming her to cancel the Control Devil's reincarnation — a loophole that exploits the fact that cannibalism (as opposed to the Chainsaw Devil's erasure) doesn't trigger concept deletion. Pochita remains as Denji's heart, dormant but alive, as the story continues into Part 2 with Asa Mitaka and the War Devil Yoru.
