Denji Overview
Denji is the main protagonist of Tatsuki Fujimoto's Chainsaw Man series. Originally a poverty-stricken teenager working as an unofficial devil hunter for the yakuza to repay his late father's massive debt, Denji's life changed forever when the yakuza betrayed him and killed his pet devil Pochita. In a final act of friendship, Pochita fused with Denji's heart, granting him the ability to transform into the Chainsaw Man by pulling a cord emerging from his chest.
After being discovered by Makima of the Public Safety Devil Hunters, Denji was recruited into Special Division 4 under the leadership of Aki Hayakawa. His simple motivations set him apart from other shonen protagonists: he fights not for justice or glory, but for a decent meal, a roof over his head, and the chance to experience basic human pleasures he was denied throughout his impoverished childhood.
Transformation & Abilities
Denji's hybrid form is activated by pulling a ripcord emerging from his chest, which causes chainsaws to emerge from his head, arms, and legs. In this form, Denji gains superhuman strength, speed, and durability, alongside the ability to regenerate from nearly any injury as long as he has blood to fuel the recovery. The chainsaws themselves are capable of tearing through most devils and fiends with ease, making Chainsaw Man one of the most feared entities in both the human world and Hell.
His regeneration ability is sustained by consuming blood. By drinking the blood of his enemies or receiving blood transfusions, Denji can recover from catastrophic damage, including dismemberment and organ loss. This immortality is directly tied to Pochita's heart, which functions as his core. As long as Pochita's heart remains intact, Denji cannot truly die. In dire situations, Pochita can take full control of the body, reverting to the true Chainsaw Devil form, a far more powerful and primal state that even Hell's primordial devils fear.
Denji has also demonstrated creative applications of his chainsaw abilities, including retracting the chainsaws to traverse terrain using their cutting power, using the chainsaw blades defensively to block attacks, and manipulating the chains to extend his reach. His power grows as the fear of chainsaws increases, in accordance with the devil-power mechanics of the Chainsaw Man universe: devils become stronger the more humans fear the concept they embody.
Character Arc
Denji begins the series as a boy who has never experienced normal life. He sold organs, lived in a shack, and ate nothing but bread with jam for survival. His initial dream was simply to get a girlfriend and live a normal life. Joining Public Safety introduces Denji to friendship, routine meals, running water, and his first genuine human connections, particularly with Aki, Power, and Makima.
The Bomb Girl Arc marks Denji's first romantic experience with Reze, a Soviet agent who initially manipulates him but ultimately develops genuine feelings. Her death at Makima's hands represents Denji's first major emotional loss. The International Assassins Arc places Denji at the center of a global conflict as assassins from every nation converge on Tokyo to claim his heart, which can grant immense power. During this arc, Denji faces Santa Claus, Quanxi, and Tolka, further expanding his understanding of the devil-hunting world beyond Japan.
The Gun Devil Arc and Control Devil Arc bring Denji's character arc to its climax. Makima reveals her true nature as the Control Devil, murders Power and Aki, and systematically strips Denji of everything he built. In response, Denji executes a plan that exploits Makima's blind spot: her inability to distinguish between Chainsaw Man and Pochita. By hiding inside Pochita's body, Denji ambushes Makima and consumes her, defeating her not through power but through strategy and understanding. He then raises the reincarnated Control Devil, Nayuta, as his younger sister.
Combat Prowess
Denji's fighting style is unorthodox and brutally effective. Unlike trained devil hunters who rely on contracts and technique, Denji fights on instinct, using his immortality to tank fatal hits and close distance before shredding opponents with chainsaws. His lack of formal training is compensated by his complete disregard for self-preservation; he will charge through bullets, blades, and devil abilities knowing his regeneration will bring him back.
In terms of notable victories, Denji has defeated the Bat Devil, Leech Devil, Eternity Devil, Katana Man, Reze, Santa Claus, Gun Devil fragments, and ultimately Makima herself. His battle with the Gun Devil was a mutual effort with Aki (controlled by the Gun Devil), while his victory over Makima relied on tactical genius rather than raw power. The only character to consistently outmatch Denji in direct combat is Quanxi, the first Devil Hunter, whose speed exceeds anything Denji has faced.
Relationships
Pochita
Denji's heart and lifelong companion. Pochita was originally the Chainsaw Devil, feared even by other devils for his ability to erase devils from existence by consuming them. After being mortally wounded, Pochita encountered a dying Denji and made a contract: "Show me your dreams." In exchange for becoming Denji's heart, Denji must live a normal life and pursue his dreams. Pochita represents unconditional love and friendship in Denji's otherwise brutal world.
Makima
The Control Devil and Public Safety Bureau Chief who initially appears as Denji's savior and mentor. Makima manipulates Denji throughout the series, granting him a family before systematically destroying it to break his spirit. Her true goal is to command Chainsaw Man and use his erasure ability to reshape reality. Denji ultimately outsmarts and consumes her, then raises her reincarnation Nayuta with compassion rather than hatred.
Aki Hayakawa
Denji's reluctant partner and eventual brother figure in Special Division 4. Aki initially views Denji as a nuisance with no discipline, but over time the two develop a genuine bond. Aki represents the normal family life Denji never had. Aki's death at the hands of the Gun Devil, and Denji's subsequent forced execution of the Gun Devil-possessed Aki, marks the series' most devastating emotional turn.
Power
The Blood Fiend and Denji's chaotic housemate. Power's selfishness and refusal to flush the toilet drive Aki insane, but she forms a genuine friendship with Denji based on a shared lack of normal socialization. Power's sacrifice to save Denji from Makima, and her final blood donation that enables Denji's resurrection, stands as the series' most heartbreaking moment.
