Reze Overview

Reze is the Bomb Devil hybrid and a Soviet agent introduced during the Bomb Girl Arc. She initially appears as a kind and charming cafe worker who develops a romantic relationship with Denji, teaching him how to swim and sharing intimate moments that suggest genuine affection. This is revealed to be a calculated infiltration mission: Reze is a Soviet-trained assassin sent to capture Denji's heart, both literally and figuratively.

Reze's character arc is defined by the conflict between her mission conditioning and her genuine emotions. Raised as a child soldier in the Soviet Union and fused with the Bomb Devil, she has never experienced normal human connection. Her time with Denji represents her first taste of genuine affection outside of mission parameters, and despite her initial manipulation, she ultimately chooses Denji over her mission, only to be killed by Makima before she can return to him.

Bomb Devil Abilities

Reze transforms by pulling a pin ring on her neck, which triggers the Bomb Devil's power. Her hybrid form grants her explosive abilities: she can detonate parts of her body, create controlled explosions for propulsion and attack, and regenerate from injuries sustained in her own blasts. Her combat style involves closing distance with explosive-enhanced speed and detonating upon contact, making her one of the most destructive hybrids in the series.

Her explosions are powerful enough to destroy buildings and vaporize devil hunters at close range. Unlike Denji's chainsaws which rely on sustained cutting, Reze's attacks are instantaneous and area-of-effect, making her uniquely dangerous in group combat. Her regeneration requires blood, like all hybrids, and she can sustain prolonged combat as long as she has access to blood sources.

Bomb Girl Arc & Tragic Fate

The Bomb Girl Arc centers on Reze's mission and her growing conflict with her own emotions. After revealing herself as an enemy, she battles Denji and the Public Safety forces, demonstrating combat superiority against conventional devil hunters. During the fighting, she has multiple opportunities to kill Denji but hesitates, revealing that her feelings have become genuine.

Her arc ends tragically: she decides to abandon her mission and return to Denji, but Makima intercepts her at the train station. In one of the series' cruelest moments, Makima kills Reze just as she is about to reunite with Denji, demonstrating her omnipresent surveillance and her willingness to eliminate anyone who might give Denji genuine happiness. Reze's death reinforces the series' theme that love offers no protection in a world controlled by devils.

Legacy & Denji's Growth

Reze represents Denji's first romantic experience and his first lesson in emotional betrayal and loss. Her storyline teaches Denji that relationships can be both genuine and manipulative simultaneously, a lesson that proves critical in understanding Makima's later behavior. Reze's genuine love for Denji, corrupted by her mission and destroyed by Makima, mirrors the tragedy of Aki's and Power's fates, establishing the pattern of love being weaponized against Denji throughout Part 1.
