Arc Summary

The Bat Devil Arc introduces Power, the Blood Fiend, who becomes one of the series' most beloved characters. Power initially lies to Denji about rescuing her cat Meowy, manipulating him into helping her kill the Bat Devil. When the Bat Devil swallows Power whole during their fight, Denji faces a choice: abandon the fiend who deceived him or save her despite her lies.

Denji's decision to save Power establishes his defining trait: he values genuine connection over transactional logic. After defeating the Bat Devil through reckless violence and chainsaw creativity, Denji rescues Power. But the battle attracts the Leech Devil, the Bat Devil's vengeful partner, who nearly kills Denji before Aki arrives and demonstrates his combat prowess.

Power Joins Division 4

Following the battle, Power is assigned to Division 4, formally creating the Denji-Aki-Power trio. Power's introduction radically shifts the series' tone. Where Aki is serious and Denji is simple, Power is chaotic, narcissistic, and a pathological liar. Her presence transforms Division 4 from tense professionalism to dysfunctional family, with Aki as the reluctant parent figure to two devil-human hybrids.

The arc also deepens the series' exploration of fiends: devils that have possessed human corpses. Power is neither fully devil nor human, existing in a liminal state that mirrors Denji's own hybrid existence. This shared otherness becomes the foundation of their unlikely friendship, one of the most genuine relationships in the entire series.

Key Themes

The Bat Devil Arc establishes the transactional nature of relationships in Chainsaw Man. Power's deception reflects the world's cynical view of human connection. Yet Denji's choice to save her anyway suggests genuine bonds can form from selfish beginnings. This theme recurs throughout the series, most notably in Denji's relationship with Makima. The arc also introduces the series' signature blend of ultraviolence, dark comedy, and unexpected emotional sincerity that defies easy categorization.
